Seeing my face on the October cover of Higher Ed Digest was a humbling experience. I’ll admit, it took me a minute to take it all in.
But as I looked at the cover and read the story, one thing was clear. This recognition isn’t mine alone. It reflects so many people I’ve had the privilege of working with along the way.
Leadership in higher education is never a solo effort. Every program we create, every barrier we remove, and every student we support takes people working together. I share this moment with the talented teams who show up every day ready to serve students and help them succeed. I’m grateful for the care, energy, and commitment you bring to this work.
Seeing the magazine also gave me a chance to think about the path that brought me to Knoxville.
My years at the University of Nebraska shaped so much of how I think about education, access, and community. My work in enrollment management and access programs taught me important lessons about opportunity and what it looks like to support students with intention. I brought those lessons with me to the University of Tennessee, and they continue to shape how I approach our work today.
We’re doing exciting things at Tennessee, but none of it happens because of one person. Changing how a university supports its students takes people who are willing to listen, try new ideas, solve problems, and keep showing up for students and for one another.
It really does take a village.
I’m grateful for my colleagues, mentors, friends, and family who’ve been part of mine. You’ve encouraged me, challenged me, and stayed beside me through every new chapter.
Thank you to Higher Ed Digest for the recognition. And thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey that brought me here.
There’s still so much good work ahead of us, and I can’t wait to see what we build together.
